If you have created a web site for your internet business, or as a way to extend your off line business, then one of the key things you need to consider is how will you get people to come to it.

No matter how great your website is, how relevant to the topics that people will be searching for, or how great your product is, that won’t get traffic to your site.

So here are 10 key ways for getting traffic.

1. Search Engine Optimisation

This is where you get so called ‘free’ traffic. Of course the actual clicks to your site from search engines don’t cost anything but search engine optimisation (or SEO) can still be expensive either in time, if you do it yourself or in money if you pay someone to do it for you. SEO is all about optimising your pages for specific keywords and then getting search engines to recognise your site as a good resource when people use those keywords in a search. This means carefully planning your site content and layout as well as getting links (called back links) from other sites.

2. Paid Clicks

Google AdWords is probably the best known. You set up adverts that have keywords behind them. You ‘bid’ an amount of money and this decides where your ad appears in the paid search results. If someone likes the look of your ad and clicks on it to go to your site then you pay for that click. How much you have bid for the keyword will decide how much you pay for the click, or at least the maximum price. Microsoft adCenter provides the same solution for Bing and Yahoo.

3. Paid Adverts

These are often banner ads that appear on other peoples web sites and if someone clicks on them they go to your web page. These ads are normally paid for on a cost per thousand views, meaning that you pay an amount of money for every time the ad is displayed, although you can sometimes get pay per click deals on these as well.

4. Forums

Posting useful content on forums that are related to your business or niche can be a great way to get traffic to your web page. Not only do you get some direct traffic from these posts but it can also make your SEO ranking better.

5. Blogs

Similar to forums. Find those that are relevant to your target market or subject and post some comments. Make them useful and relevant and you can get links back to your own web page. Also helps with your SEO

6. Article sites

Publish articles on the big article sites, such as EzineArticles. You can include a link in your signature or resource box that sends people to your chosen web page. Again this not only helps for direct links but improves your SEO score.

7. Join Ventures

Find another business or website that is complimentary to your and ask them about sharing some marketing. If you have a product that will be of interest to their customers, and they have a product that will be of interest to yours, then you can e mail your own lists with details of the other businesses product and they do the same.

8. Free Adverts

Depending on the type of business you can use free classified advert sites to promote your own website. Ideally look for those that allow you to a link to your website rather than just your e mail address.

9. Social Networking

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn. These sites and services provide a wealth of potential leads for your business. Find the groups that are interested in what you have to sell and link to them. Establish the relationship first and then invite them to visit your website.

10. Offline

People get so bogged down in how to advertise online that they forget about the offline possibilities. Newspaper ads, flyers, leaflets, posters etc. These can all be great ways to promote your website.
